Iron, Sulfer & Algae |
We have seen areas in this region where Iron & / or Sulfur has become an issue for people on wells. The smell of sulfur is similar to that of rotten eggs and can permeate an entire household. Iron causes issues of staining in and around fixtures like sinks, tubs, toilets and basins. Iron also conspires to stain clothing and dishes making them dingy and otherwise unsightly. Too much iron is not advised in the diet as it can have adverse effects on health. There are a couple of different approaches to these issues and the decision on which to use is based on the amount of iron or sulfur and the potential use of hazardous chemicals used in the regeneration process of some equipment. Manganese Greensand Filters are used for the removal of soluble iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide from the well water supplies. Manganese greensand is a purple-black filter medium processed from glauconite greensand. Manganese greensand is a proven technology for iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide removal. A chemical free option to this is a system called an ‘Air-De-Air’. This type of system introduces micro-bubbles into the water stream and into a holding tank. The introduced air changes the characteristics of the iron from soluble water borne to an oxidized particulate that can be filtered using a multi-media tank. Although this type of system typically costs more to purchase and install, no hazardous chemicals are used. |
